Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of 2025 Earns a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
