Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Backlash

Individuals from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.

“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

Some GOP elected officials also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared members in his political party to defend the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of another political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
