Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a controversial video.

The Message That Triggered the Controversy

The clip, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in military or intelligence capacities.

"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to protect and defend this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can refuse improper directives, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to execute directives that break the legal system or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Angry Response

The video message reportedly provoke a furious reaction from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders React

Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader issued a joint statement denouncing the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our United States with great national pride and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the security of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme digital publications and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Response

The officials who participated in the video also issued a statement.

"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this country and took an vow to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental responsibility."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the statutes," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "All citizens must join forces and censure the ex-president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."

Additional Partisan Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the execution of elected officials."

He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."

The GOP official also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and determine all that."

Administration Statement

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."

"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the representative declared. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She said: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
