Fly-tippers cover open land in enormous heap of waste

Waste pile in Oxfordshire Local resident
Illegal dumping site

This location has been labeled an "environmental crisis".
A reporter visited the scene and said the heap appeared to be "twenty feet in height at least".

Waste criminals have discarded a massive amount of garbage in a field in Oxfordshire.

The "environmental catastrophe occurring in full view" is approximately 150m (490ft) extending and 6m (20ft) high.

The massive mound has appeared in a plot of land next to the River Cherwell near Kidlington.

A local MP brought up the problem in parliament, declaring it was "posing risk of an environmental disaster".

Conservation group reported the unauthorized rubbish dump was formed about a few weeks back by an illegal operation.

"This is an environmental crisis developing in plain sight.

"Every day that passes increases the threat of poisonous run-off getting into the waterways, contaminating wildlife and endangering the condition of the whole watershed.

"Environmental authorities must act promptly, not in the distant future, which is their typical reaction time."

A restriction order had been established by the regulatory body.

It is difficult to identify any individual bits of waste as it seems to have been pulverized with earth mixed in.

A portion of the waste from the top of the pile has toppled and is now only five metres from the river.

The River Cherwell is a branch of the River Thames, which means it runs through Oxford before meeting the Thames.

The MP stated the price of removing the waste would be high

The MP asked the authorities for support to clear the illegal tip before it resulted in a blaze or was carried into the water network.

Informing elected representatives on this week, he stated: "Lawbreakers have dumped a massive amount of unauthorized plastic waste... amounting to many tons, in my constituency on a floodplain next to the River Cherwell.

"Stream volumes are rising and temperature readings show that the waste is also increasing in temperature, elevating the danger of blaze.

"Regulatory body said it has restricted capabilities for regulation, that the anticipated price of removal is greater than the whole twelve-month allocation of the municipal authority."

Environment minister said the government had taken over a struggling recycling sector that had caused an "growing issue of unlawful waste disposal".

She advised parliament members the organization had issued a restriction order to prevent more entry to the site.

In a announcement, the authority stated it was looking into the situation and asked for details.

It stated: "We acknowledge the public's concern about situations like this, which is why we take action against those accountable for waste crime."

A recently published study determined attempts to tackle serious illegal dumping have been "severely overlooked" even though the problem growing bigger and more complex.

The Environment and Climate Change Committee proposed an autonomous "root and branch" investigation into how "widespread" illegal dumping is addressed.
