Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Characters
It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I recall him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also exists.
Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
