According to a ex- high-ranking official from the Metropolitan police, police departments are increasingly pressured to disclose the racial identities of individuals under investigation in response to a surge in extremist conjecture on online networks.

Case Study: Knife Attack on Train in a UK County

Early Sunday, British Transport Police reported the detainment of two individuals following a multiple knife attacks aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. One suspect, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and a second, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were initially held. Subsequently, the older suspect was released with no further action, and authorities confirmed he had no connection in the attack.

New Guidance to Combat Misinformation

This past summer, new guidelines were rolled out to address the dissemination of false narratives on digital platforms, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in Southport last summer.

However, advocates warned that this approach could lead to an overemphasis on the ethnicity of suspects and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when information are withheld with the public.

Insights from a Former Officer

Dal Babu, who served in the Metropolitan Police, labeled the requirement for law enforcement to reveal the race of suspects in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he stated.

He voiced understanding for his former colleagues in the force, noting that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes the area where the train halted, called it “sad” but necessary for police to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, adding that social media are leveraged to push agendas, making it vital for law enforcement to provide accurate information to counter speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Before the police announcement, right-leaning politicians had called for a faster response. For instance, Chris Philp urged for prompt sharing of suspect information, while Nigel Farage stated on X that the people should be informed “without delay”.

Moreover, extremist profiles online sought to manipulate the incident. A profile named “British Patriot”—boosting thousands of followers—circulated an unsubstantiated claim that a individual with a blade had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Even after police clarified that the suspects were British nationals, certain individuals continued to suggest that information was being concealed. Ben Habib stated it was “almost inconceivable” that the incident was unrelated to terrorism, contrary to police assurances indicating otherwise.

Guidance Background

These protocols were created by the UK police leadership body in recognition of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “effective in today’s fast-paced information era”.

The initiative came soon after a political party accused authorities of hiding the identities and immigration status of two men accused in a separate case in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a vehicle drove into spectators celebrating a football victory, local authorities disclosed that the arrested man was a white UK national to quash rumors of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

The NPCC stressed that decisions on releasing such information would remain with local departments, taking into account broader moral and legal factors. Confirming a suspect’s immigration status would fall to the UK interior ministry, not police.
