Putin Assures Continuous Crude Oil Supplies to India in Rebuff of American Pressure

Amid a unambiguous signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to maintain “continuous” supplies of crude oil to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to external pressure.”

A Statement Directed at the West

Putin's comments, made on Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at Washington, who have tried to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its historical links with Moscow. The backdrop comes after recent American measures, including additional import duties against Indian goods due to its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Russia is a reliable source of energy resources and anything needed for the development of India’s economy,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to continue securing the steady delivery of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, without referencing crude explicitly, reinforced the theme by saying that “energy security has been a key and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

In the lead-up to the summit, in a television interview, Putin had questioned US interference on India's energy purchases. He argued, “When Washington has the right to buy our uranium, then why can't India have the same privilege?”

This trip was his maiden visit to India following the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations made a visible effort to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders persisted strongly.

An Unusual Reception

Employing an unusual move, Modi welcomed directly Putin right off the plane. Both leaders embraced warmly akin to longtime companions before holding a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

He later described India's relationship with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “founded on mutual respect and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Strategic Ties

The meeting resulted in several important deals in the fields of defence and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the finalization of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which sets a goal to boost commerce to a hundred billion USD annually by the 2030 deadline.

Furthermore agreed to reshape their defence ties. While Russia is still India's biggest exporter of defence equipment, this role has declined over the past decade as India has sought diversify its procurement.

The joint statement stressed cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge weapons platforms, even if direct mention of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

In conclusion, both nations reiterated that in the “current complex, difficult, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership remain resilient to external pressure.”
