Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival
This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, having been shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
