The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
