What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
